In this blog we will analyze the Ukrainian conflict for an understanding of the various factors and issues that have contributed to the ongoing conflict and its escalation. We will focus on the actors involved, an analysis of the conflict, and the recommendations for the ongoing conflict.
Before we head into an analysis of this current conflict we need to first understand the context and history and the parties involved. We will take a look at the long and complicated history of the Ukraine, Crimea and its relationship with Russia and the rest of Europe
History
The Ukraine has a long history of being occupied and has been under the rule of multiple countries and empires. In the sixteenth century most of the area that is currently known as the Ukraine was ruled by Poland and Lithuania. Russia ruled over most of its eastern territories. Over the centuries Russia's control spread to the central parts and towards the west. By the mid eighteenth century Poland had given up control of this region which was now under Russian rule. At the time this area was populated by the Cossacks and Slavic people. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Asian nomadic peoples and Slavs moved to the south eastern portion of the Ukraine.
In 1918 Ukraine declared independence and established the Ukranian People's Republic. In the 1940s Stalin deported hundreds of thousands Crimean Tartars and displaced them with Russian soldiers and families.
From Stalin’s mass executions of intellectuals and Nazi Germany’s occupation during the 1940s to the present-day violence, Ukraine has consistently experienced harsh conflict – especially with its neighbor: Russia.
