Crimea
During February 2014 thousands of pro-Russian soldiers established checkpoints at two main crossings from mainland Ukraine to the Crimean peninsula: Armyansk and Chongar in order to annex Crimea from Ukraine on behalf of Moscow.
For over 300 years, Crimea has been seized by numerous countries primarily due to it's strategic location which is accessible via port, rail, and air, as well as it's natural resources including iron ore, coal, natural gas, timber, and arable land. Identifying the exact interests of the Crimean citizens is difficult due it's divisive association with the Ukraine and Russia. However as with any geographic area that has experienced tumultuous conflicts initiated by outside forces, it's citizens' key interests are likely peace and stability.
